Japan - SG Mark Approval

Japanese ‘Consumer Product Safety Association’ (CPSA) operates the national SG Mark system. As a manufacturer or retailer of various specific goods, you have the responsibility to prove that your regulated products comply with standards set in the Safe Goods (SG) certification scheme, before they can be placed on the Japanese market. This program seeks to prevent cases where human life is endangered or injuries are caused by product structure and materials as covered in the (Consumer) Product Liability Law of Japan (1995). The program moreover includes a liability insurance, granting compensations in case of a personal accident due to a defect in a product marked with the SG mark. SG approval requires testing according to national SG standards. Product certification is applied using two different methods: ‘Lot Certification’ and ‘Factory Registration and Type Confirmation.’ While each product is checked in course of a ‘Lot Certification’, the manufacturer shows sufficient capability for producing acceptable goods as part of the Type Approval.
