European Union - (EU) 'Directive 2009/125 on ecodesign requirements for energy related products' (ErP)

Gain access to the EU-market with Ecodesign of energy-related products and our support

The European Union (EU) ‚DIRECTIVE 2009/125 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products‘. Per definition in Articles 2 and 15 respectively, ‘energy-related product’ means any good that has an impact on energy consumption during use, based on e.g. ‘a significant volume of sales’ (200 000 units a year within the European Union) or ‘a significant potential for improvement in terms of its environmental impact without entailing excessive costs’*. The directive itself does not stipulate products or related specific requirements, but in Article 15 sets the basis for specific ‘implementing measures’ that energy-related products must fulfil in order to be placed on the market and/or put into service. Thus ‘it contributes to sustainable development by increasing energy efficiency and the level of protection of the environment, while at the same time increasing the security of the energy supply.’* Means of transport for persons or goods are excluded from the directive. Taken the ‘COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2019/2020‘ for light sources and separate control gears as an example, it describes implementation by e.g. a scope definition, ecodesign requirements, removal / product replacement activities and the available conformity assessment procedures. Ecodesign requirements cover aspects like energy efficiency, endurance, functional and information requirements. Technical documentation to be prepared by the manufacturer shall include e.g. model information and calculations. Considering technological progress, the regulation is to be reviewed in due time. *Source: ‘DIRECTIVE 2009/125 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products’ Contact us for support with the Conformity Assessment procedure for your energy-related equipment in accordance with the Ecodesign directive and its implementing measures.
