Clearance and Gauging Services for Railway Technology

Enabling safe and successful rail operations through precise clearance analysis and improved infrastructure management

At the core of safe and efficient rail networks lies the science of gauging and clearance. We work alongside rail professionals globally to deliver expert gauging assessments that ensure vehicles run safely and reliably across infrastructure. Whether it's validating new vehicle introductions, analysing infrastructure upgrades, or managing complex mixed-traffic networks, we bring deep technical expertise and a solution-driven approach to every project.

We leverage industry-standard tools such as probabilistic gauging, swept envelope analysis, and vehicle simulation. These methods give us the flexibility to approach each project with the right level of detail, from initial feasibility through to final approval. Our understanding of international gauging practices and compliance requirements means we can adapt to regional standards and regulatory frameworks with ease.

What is Clearance?

Whether you're managing a high-speed network, a metro system, or mixed-traffic freight corridors, we are here to provide clarity in clearance. We combine data, engineering, and insight to support the safe, efficient, and future-ready railways you rely on.

Manage and Monitor Entire Networks

Our services are tailored to support infrastructure owners and operators in maintaining network safety, maximising capacity, and planning for future developments. We help identify clearance risks early in the process, optimise tunnel and platform usage, and support approvals for both legacy and modernised networks. With evolving demands and tighter tolerances, we provide robust and transparent reporting that inspires confidence in decision-makers.

Supporting Rolling Stock Owners and Manufacturers Internationally

For rolling stock owners and manufacturers, we offer support throughout the vehicle design, approval, and deployment lifecycle. Whether you're developing a new fleet or adapting an existing one for a new route, we assess compatibility with infrastructure, deliver gauging envelopes, and help manage the interface with multiple network conditions. Our goal is to support both compliance and innovation without compromise.

How does your clearance analysis work?

We assess the space between railway vehicles and infrastructure using advanced simulation and gauging techniques. This ensures trains can operate safely and efficiently within the physical constraints of a route. Our process includes modelling the vehicle movement, infrastructure geometry, and track alignment to identify potential conflicts or non-compliances.

What software do you use for clearance assessments?

We use our own internally developed software called PhX and D/Gauge Rift. Both software have been operating for decades providing exceptional clearance capabilities. TÜV Rheinland’s calculations are completed using industry-leading clearance analysis software. It delivers fast, detailed results through advanced simulation, a structure library, and configurable safety margins to suit international standards and project needs.

Do you use existing data, or can you obtain network data for our project?

Yes, we can work with your existing infrastructure and vehicle data. If that’s not available, we can source or collect network data using trusted survey partners and open data sources, ensuring your project has the right foundation for accurate clearance analysis.

What is the difference between gauging and clearance?

Gauging is the process of measuring whether trains can safely pass through infrastructure, such as tunnels, platforms, and bridges, without striking anything. Clearance refers to the actual space or distance between the train and surrounding structures. Simply put: gauging is the assessment; clearance is the result. Together, they ensure safe and efficient rail operations.

Can gauging increase my revenue generation?

Yes. Intelligent gauging unlocks the ability to run more services, introduce new rolling stock, or optimise existing routes—all of which can increase passenger or freight capacity. By identifying underused clearance, you can safely make better use of your infrastructure and drive higher returns from your assets.

Can I turn this gauging data into a profit or business saving?

Absolutely. Gauging data helps you avoid unnecessary infrastructure modifications, reduce service disruptions, and make informed investment decisions. It supports efficient planning, risk mitigation, and smarter route design—leading to long-term cost savings and more profitable operations.

How safe and secure is my data?

Your data is protected by robust security protocols, including encrypted storage, secure access controls, and full compliance with relevant data protection regulations. Whether you're using cloud-based tools or sharing files with our team, your information remains confidential, safe, and only accessible to authorised users.
