TÜV Rheinland and GP Joule: Advancing a Cleaner Future with Green Hydrogen
GP Joule, a German energy supplier, has made zero-emission mobility with green hydrogen its mission. Founded in 2009 by Heinrich Gärtner and Ove Petersen, the company began t with small solar installations on their family farms in North Frisia. Today, GP Joule develops solar and biogas plants and implements large-scale hydrogen projects across Germany. To ensure the highest standards in this field, the company relies on TÜV Rheinland as an independent partner.
The partnership started in 2019 with an inspection report required under Section 18 of the German Industrial Safety Ordinance for the construction of a hydrogen filling station. Since then, TÜV Rheinland has conducted feasibility studies, prepared risk analyses, supported the permitting process in close coordination with authorities, and validated refueling protocols. TÜV Rheinland is also among the first accredited inspection bodies for green hydrogen under CertifHy, the European certification system for sustainably produced hydrogen, and inspects filling stations before they are put into operation.
Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water, a climate-neutral process powered exclusively by renewable sources such as solar and wind power.
“The production of green hydrogen from renewable energy and the promotion of innovative technologies are crucial to making a tangible contribution to climate protection,” says Jessica Krüger, Junior Project Manager for Hydrogen at TÜV Rheinland. With its proven expertise in testing and certification, TÜV Rheinland helps bring sustainable technologies to market while driving innovation for zero-emission mobility.
