  1. Expanded responsibilities of top management
especially regarding promoting quality culture and ethical behaviour (clause 5.1)
  2. Risks and opportunities are clearly separated.
Measures to address the respective risks and opportunities are being considered separately
  3. Strengthened management of changes: Requirements related to changes to the quality management system have been reinforced to support the achievement of intended results (clause 6.3)
  4. Employee awareness is expanded to include the areas of quality culture and ethical behaviour (clause 7.3)

  • Working Draft (WD): Internal working draft within the committee (serves as a rough content orientation)
  • Committee Draft (CD): First publicly visible drafts, which are commented on within the ISO committees
  • Draft International Standard (DIS): Mature draft version, also released for public commenting – for the first time allowing broader participation
  • Final Draft International Standard (FDIS): Nearly final version for voting without content changes – only final editorial adjustments
  • International Standard (IS): Final publication by ISO – serves as the basis for certifications

What is the current status of ISO 9001?

The current version of ISO 9001 dates from 2015. A revision has been in the works for several years. The new version was published on 16 September 2026. A three-year transition period has been provided for, i.e. until September 2029.

What are the key changes in the revision of the new ISO 9001?

The 2026 revision brings some exciting developments. The key changes include:

  1. Integration of sustainability aspects:
Already in spring 2024, ISO required companies to assess the relevance of climate change for their management system and, if necessary, incorporate it into their processes. The amendment (ISO 9001:2015/Amd. 1:2024), once published, was fully incorporated into ISO 9001:2026.
This means the topic remains a key focus. Companies need to evaluate, among other things:
► Is your organization affected – for example, due to CO₂ requirements?
► Are there impacts on your product or service portfolio?
Companies must then draw conclusions, identify risks, and take measures, such as improving recycling options, systematically reducing energy or media usage, or adjusting their fleet.
  2. Expanded leadership responsibilities:
Top management will be required to demonstrate leadership and commitment regarding the quality management system by explicitly promoting a quality culture, integrity, and ethical behavior. A new note in the revision states: “An organization’s quality culture and ethical behaviour are reflected in its shared values, attitudes, practices and actions”
  3. Handling of risk and opportunity management:
The 2026 version of ISO 9001 breaks down section 6.1 into sub-sections to allow a clearer distinction between measures to address risks and pursue opportunities.
Quality objectives and planning to achieve them: Quality objectives must be measurable, but only where practical.
  4. changes in needs and expectations of interested parties must be considered in the management system
  5. Planning of changes: The organization must consider how:
    - to communicate the changes
    - the effectiveness of changes will be verified and evaluated, and
    - the results of the changes will be reviewed.
  6. Enhanced organizational awareness to promote quality culture and ethical behavior:
Clause 7.3 adds a new requirement for employee awareness regarding understanding “quality culture and ethical behavior.”
  7. Internal Audits, definition of audit targets in internal audit program (clause 9.2.2)

What steps should companies take now?

A revision of a standard provides an opportunity to optimise your own quality management system. Make the most of this opportunity to carry out an effectiveness review.

For certified organisations:

  • Review and optimise your existing quality management system.
  • Your current system provides the ideal foundation for the 2026 version.

For non-certified organisations:

  • Do not wait until certification to ISO 9001:2026 becomes available. If applicable, seek certification to ISO 9001:2015.
  • Incorporate the planned changes into your management system as soon as possible.

A three-year transition period is provided for, i.e. until September 2029
