Phoenix is an accepted course provider of the TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Training Program.

Within the European Economic Area, only machines complying with the safety requirements of the Machinery Directive and marked with a CE mark may be placed on the market. For this purpose, it is necessary that legal requirements are integrated into the company processes.

Within this training the context of requirements will be explained. In small groups participants will learn how to design the conformity process on a real example machine in a very practice-oriented way.

Knowledge regarding the implementation of the activities required for the Functional Safety of machines will be passed on as well as information about further required steps before the CE mark can be affixed.

The process of technical measures for Functional Safety is divided into eight phases (phase 0 to phase 7). This allows the implementation of all safety-related requirements in a consistent, plannable and thus comprehensible manner. The procedure for each phase is illustrated using the example of a safety function.

Day 1

  • Introduction of Machinery Directive

Day 2

Phase 0: Risk assessment of the machine

  • Determination of the acceptable residual risk
  • Determination of the machine limits
  • Identification of hazards
  • Assessing risks
  • Definition of suitable risk parameters
  • Risk reduction by appropriate measures (constructive, technical, indicative)
  • Determination of safety parameters (SIL/PL)

Day 3

Phase 1: Security planning

  • Creating the project description
  • Strategy for achieving functional safety
  • Definition of measures
  • Planning the safety-relevant documentation
  • Planning activities and resources
  • Planning verification and validation

Phase 2: Specification

  • Defining the framework conditions and parameters for each safety function
  • Selection of suitable protective devices
  • Checking the safety parameters (SIL/PL)
  • Planning of the EMC-compliant installation
  • Selection of safety-related parts of the control system
  • Preparation and inspection of hardware and software specifications

Phase 3: Validation planning

  • Viewing the safety functions under the possible operating states and operating modes
  • Defining test criteria and test objectives
  • Describing the procedure for performing the test
  • Specification of test cases

Day 4

Phase 4: Implementation

  • Installation of the planned security hardware
  • Parameterization of the safe devices
  • Programming of the safety-related application software according to the software specification sheet

Phase 5: Verification

  • Inspection of the application software of the device parameters, the installed safety functions and the EMC-compliant installation

Phase 6: Code simulation

  • Creation / inspection of a test specification for code simulation
  • Code simulation of the security functions

Phase 7: Validation

  • Function test of the safety functions
  • Summary of all results of inspections and tests in the verification and validation report
  • Configuration management: Control of all documents and project files as well as summarization in the configuration management plan.

Day 5

  • Summary of topics
  • Answering participant questions
  • Exam


  • Requirements for participation in the training:
    Basic knowledge of the Machinery Directive and EN ISO 13849-1 (proven either by employer or by certificate of attendance of acc. seminar.)
  • Requirements for participation in the exam:
    A completed technical education with additional two years of work experience in the field of mechanical engineering or electrical equipment of machines (skilled worker, technician, master craftsman, FS engineer).
  • Duration of the exam: approx. 2 hours
    Upon successful completion of the exam, participants will receive the FS Technician (TÜV Rheinland) certificate and are listed by name as FS Technician for Machinery - CE Practice on TÜV Rheinland's website Certipedia (


2.500 Euro plus VAT.

2.800 Euro plus VAT with exam and FS Technician (TÜV Rheinland) Machinery - CE Practice-Certificate (if you pass the exam).
