The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy awarded TÜV Rheinland, in partnership with the city of Monheim, the Reallabore Award for innovation in its autonomous bus project.
Together with the city of Monheim, TÜV Rheinland was selected over more than 120 other applicants to receive the “Reallabore” award in the "Insights" category for its automated public transport bus.
The autonomous buses have been operating regular services since February 2020. To date, this is the only project of its kind operating in Germany. With 7 bus stops and a total route of 2.7 kilometres, the buses connect the city centre with the old town. The electric motors are charged exclusively with green electricity. The buses run fully automatically and are equipped with sensors. For legal reasons, however, there is a so-called operator in the vehicle.
As a pioneer for new mobility solutions, we have been able to support the city of Monheim since May 2018 in the areas of vehicle, track and functional safety assessment, as well as the preparation of documentation relevant to approval.
With this successful project, our dedicated, interdisciplinary team was able to utilize the new technology of highly automated and networked driving in mixed public transport within a (bus) line concession onto the road, thus creating confidence in these technologies.
