Exemptions for Level 3 and 4 prototypes

Exemptions for Level 3 and 4 prototypes

We get your highly automated prototypes onto the road

Obtaining exemptions to test highly automated prototypes on public roads are a vital step in autonomous and networked vehicle development.

We can obtain exemptions quickly and easily on your behalf. Our experts for automated and networked driving are familiar with all worldwide regulations governing the testing of vehicles with functions above SAE Level 2.

This makes us ideal partners in obtaining public road approvals for prototypes and test vehicles. Find out more about our wide-ranging expertise.

Defining methods and processes for road testing

SAE Levels 3 and 4 for highly automated driving require testing under real conditions. However, the legal hurdles are high for manufacturers and development service providers. We have therefore developed methods and processes to get approvals to test highly automated vehicles on public roads. These methods and processes cover a vehicle's technical safety, route assessments and recommendations, and functional safety.

We probably have the most expertise in the industry for getting test vehicles onto public roads. As a globally active service provider, we have full knowledge of international regulations. Specialists in all our test centers use our validation platform and databases to access the knowledge and global experience we have accumulated.

You are then able to gain exemptions for your highly automated prototype.

Exemptions according to international standards

A major moment in any development cycle is leaving the test track to test a prototype with Level 3 or 4 functions in "the wild". But legislators in the relevant countries impose high standards before allowing this.

For exemptions – also known as exception approvals – our local experts focus on three areas:

1. Prerequisites for the intended route and usage, operational restrictions and conditions, and the intelligent infrastructure, without which highly automated driving with functions above Level 2 would be unthinkable. This includes checking of digital mapping and positioning of the prototype/test vehicle in the traffic area.

2. The functioning of all safety-relevant systems on the vehicle, such as emergency braking and shutdown devices. This also includes appropriately trained personnel, such as safety or test drivers, as well as trained operators for the vehicle and the relevant technology.

3. Functional safety according to international standards such as ISO 26262, ISO 23374 and SOTIF-ISO 21448.

We are already developing tailor-made test methods for the legal regulations expected from 2024 onwards.
