TÜV Rheinland Foundation and commitment to the UN Global Compact

To promote the long-term global development of safety and quality, TÜV Rheinland has been supporting the United Nations Global Compact since 2006. The initiative to found the Global Compact was taken by then General Secretary of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, at the 1999 World Economic Forum in Davos. He asked the key representatives of the leading commercial enterprises to create an international alliance (global compact) in order to anchor principles from the fields of human rights, working standards and environmental protection as minimum standards in their companies, and to promote such standards throughout the world. The field of anti-corruption was added in 2004.

In addition to its work on the Steering Committee of the German Network, a key component of the TÜV Rheinland Group’s commitment to the Global Compact is presenting the International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award. The award has been awarded since 2008 by the TÜV Rheinland Foundation, the benefactor of which is TÜV Rheinland Berlin Brandenburg Pfalz e.V. The prize honors outstanding people whose work supports the goals of the United Nations Global Compact. In 2020, the TÜV Rheinland Foundation honored mountaineer Reinhold Messner with the International TÜV Rheinland Global Compact Award. Past honorees include political scientist Prof. Edda Müller, former Federal Minister Dr. Volker Hauff and businessman Dr. Michael Otto as well as the Kenyan Germanist, sociologist and author Dr. Auma Obama in 2017.

In addition, the TÜV Rheinland Foundation pursues its own social projects with the purpose of promoting activities in the field of safety and energy technology, transportation and environmental protection and improving development assistance, education and training.
