USA - Update on Safety Standard for Automatic Residential Garage Door Operators

​On October 30, 2026 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a direct final rule on updated Safety Standard for Automatic Residential Garage Door Operators. This rule is effective on December 29, 2026 unless significant adverse comments were received by November 30, ​2026.

In October 2025, updates to the entrapment protection provisions in the UL 325 standard were accepted under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 1990 (Improvement Act) for inclusion in the Commission's mandatory safety regulation for automatic residential garage door operators. In this direct final rule, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (Commission) is amending the Commission's automatic residential garage door operators mandatory regulation to align with the changes in UL 325, Seventh edition, dated September 15, 2025​.​​ This direct final rule includes a new requirement covering battery-powered operators, including operators with battery back-up systems.
