USA - Maine Prohibits Mercury-Containing Compact Fluorescent Lamps

​Maine adopted the Bill HP 1160 on 5 July without the signature of the Governor, banning certain mercury-containing compact fluorescent lamps with exemptions.

​- screw or bayonet base type mercury containing compact fluorescent lamp, effective January 1, 2024;

- pin base type or linear fluorescent lamp containing mercury, effective January 1, 2025.

Exemptions:

​- exclusively for image capture and projection;

- has a high proportion of UV light emission;

- exclusively for use in medical or veterinary diagnosis or treatment or in a medical device;

- exclusively for use in the manufacturing or quality control of pharmaceutical products;

- exclusively for spectroscopy and photometric applications;

- exclusively for use by academic and research institutions for conducting research projects and experiments;

- used to replace a lamp in a motor vehicle that was manufactured on or before January 1, 2020.
