USA (EPA) - Smartway Certification for Low Resistance Tires (LRR) - Voluntary
The SmartWay Verification Program evaluates the ability of low rolling resistance (LRR) tires and retread technologies to
reduce resistance and improve fuel economy or emissions for Class 8
tractor-trailers.
This is a voluntary process in which the manufacturer:
1. Applies for SmartWay verification and submits test reports for EPA verification – both online processes;
2. Provides copies of the original laboratory test reports – translated to English, when applicable;
3. Provides a copy of the laboratory accreditation certificate – translated to English, when applicable;
4. Provides tire's marketing material such as company brochures and catalog entries;
5. Shares web page;
6. If retread tire manufacturer then he shall also include:
6.1. One picture showing tread model stamping on the tread edge and
6.2. One picture showing tread face;
7. Submits requested materials to Tech_Center@epa.gov
8. Undergoes EPA's verification. EPA may purchase and test tires pursuing SmartWay "certification" for audit.
Note: due to the complexity of the verification process, EPA cannot guarantee specific time frames for completion. However, manufacturers can expedite the process by providing immediate, accurate, and complete responses to all EPA inquiries.
