USA - California to Restrict PFAS in Food Packaging
The Bill AB 1200 was passed in Senate on September 3, and enrolled last week, waiting for the approval from the Governor.
The bill would prohibit, by amending the Health and Safety Code, any food packaging that contains regulated perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) equal to or above 100ppm. The proposed effective date is January 1, 2023.
Food packaging means a nondurable package, packaging component, or food service ware that is intended to contain, serve, store, handle, protect, or market food, foodstuffs, or beverages, and is comprised, in substantial paper, paperboard, or other materials originally derived from plant fibers, e.g. food or beverage containers, take-out food containers, unit product boxes, liners, wrappers, serving vessels, eating utensils, straws, food boxes, and disposable plates, bowls, or strays.
