US - PFOA Listed Under Proposition 65 as a Carcinogen
The Office of Enivonrmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is adding perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, effective February 25, 2022.
PFOA was first listed, together with perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), in 2017 as a chemical known to the State of California to cause reproductive toxicity. Both PFOA and PFOS are surfactants that have been used in variety of consumer products, including carpets, textiles, leather, non-stick cookware, and paper coatings used in food packaging, to confer stain, grease and water resistance. PFOA is also used in the production of fluoropolymers.
Both substances are generated as degradation products of other perfluorinated compounds.
