Thailand - Draft Ministerial Regulation on Plastic Utensils for Food TIS 655 Part 1-2553 (2010)

The draft ministerial regulation mandates plastic utensils for food to conform with the standard for Plastic Utensils for Food - Part 1 Polyethylene, Polpropylene, Polystyrene, Poly(Ethlene Terephthalate), Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) and Poly(Methyl Pentene) - TIS 655 Part 1-2553 (2010).

This standard covers plastic containers and utensils in contact with food, single-use or reusable, made from single material or multiple materials, single layer or multiple layers used for preparing, storing or consuming, and includes composition of container in contact with food e.g. cap, space, or inner cap. This standard separates plastic utensils by usability in three conditions i.e. high temperature, normal temperature and chilling temperature. It classifies plastic utensils for food by types of plastics into 6 types i.e. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly (vinyl alcohol) and poly (methyl pentene). This standard specifies general requirements e.g. resistance to temperature, odor and taste, resistance to impact, safety requirements. It also includes packaging, marking and labeling, sampling and criteria for conformity and testing.
