Japan - The Partial Amendment of "Regulation for Vehicles Type Designation", etc.
Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) established the “Study Group for the Prevention of Fraudulent Acts Related to Vehicle Type Designation,” which includes experts, in order to prevent recurrence.
Based on discussions in the Study Group, a summary report was presented in December 2024, outlining the following measures aimed at mitigating the risk of misconducts by automobile manufacturers and others (hereinafter referred to as the “Automobile Manufacturers”).
At the phase of type designation, progress of internal control regarding type designation application process in Automobile Manufactures shall be examined.
After type designation, mass-produced vehicles shall be tested and their conformity to the regulations shall be monitored.
Those who violated the regulations shall be further examined at their type designation application process for a certain period.
Japan intends to make amendments to institutionalize the necessary measures, referring to the abovementioned measures outlined in the summary report.
Proposed date of adoption: March 2025
Proposed date of entry into force: April 2025 and April 2026
