Ireland - Aligning Furniture Safety Requirements with EU General Product Safety Regulation

On July 24, 2026, Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment announced the revocation of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order 1995, representing a significant step in modernizing the country's furniture product regulatory framework.

This change aligns Ireland's approach to furniture safety with the European Union's General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), applicable since December 13, 2024. The GPSR establishes a comprehensive framework to ensure that only safe consumer products are placed on the EU market.

The Department confirmed that the revocation will not require businesses to withdraw products already lawfully placed on the Irish market. Existing furniture products may continue to be sold, provided they comply with the GPSR and any other applicable legal requirements.

By removing a separate national flammability requirement for furniture, the measure supports closer alignment with product safety standards across the European Union. Under the GPSR, enforcement authorities continue to hold broad powers to investigate unsafe products, require corrective action, order recalls, and remove dangerous products from the market.​​
