EU - Parliament Adopted the Ban of PFAS and BPA in Packaging
On November 23, 2023, the EU Parliament adopted its position on the new EU-wide rules on packaging, to tackle constantly growing waste and boost reuse and recycling.
MEPs approved the proposal report for the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation with 426 votes in favor, 125 against and 74 abstentions, banning the use of forever chemicals per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging. In other words, food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS or BPA might be prohibited in the EU 18 months after the enforcement of the new Regulation.
Besides, the new regulation also sets specific targets to reduce plastic packaging, encourages reuse and refill options for consumer, promotes a better collection and recycling of packaging waste.
The EU Parliament is ready to start talks with national governments on the final form of the law.
