EU - Further Postponing the Expiry Date of Approval of Creosote for Use in Biocidal Products

The EU Commission postpones the expiry date of approval of creosote for use in biocidal products of product-type 8 to October 31, 2022.

An application was submitted for the renewal of the approval of creosote for use in biocidal products for product-type 8 in 2016. As the opinion of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) on the renewal of the approval of the active substance was not yet available by July 2020, the expiry date of approval of creosote has once been postponed to October 31, 2021.

Furthermore, creosote, its compound and wood treated with them are subject to restrictions in Annex XVII to REACH Regulation. France is to submit to ECHA an Annex XV dossier, initiating a restrictions procedure. Further examination needs to take place in order to ensure consistency between the assessment of the renewal of the approval of creosote as an active substance under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and the coming restriction procedure under REACH.

Therefore, the expiry date of approval of creosote for use in biocidal products was further extended one more year to October 31, 2022.
