EU - Consultation on a RoHS Exemption for Chromium (VI)

Certain hazardous substances are restricted in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. Specific, time-limited exemptions can be granted upon request from businesses if the necessary criteria are met.

This draft initative concerns a request for an exemption for hexavalent chromium as an anticorrosion agent in the working fluid of the carbon steel sealed circuit of gas absorption heat pumps, which are considered to be EEE.

A new exemption entry (9(a)-III) is proposed to be inserted in Annex III to RoHS Directive:

9(a)-III
Up to 0.7% hexavalent chromium by weight, used as an anticorrosion agent in the working fluid of the carbon steel sealed circuit of gas absorption heat pumps for space and water heating
Applies to category 1 and expires on December 31, 2026

The draft act is open for feedback for 4 weeks until July 8, 2022
