Canada - Proposed New Requirements for Lithium-ion Batteries and Consumer Products Containing Lithium-ion Batteries under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act

Health Canada is proposing a regulatory initiative under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) to introduce mandatory safety requirements for lithium-ion batteries and consumer products containing them, aiming to mitigate risks such as overheating, fire, and explosions caused by poor design or manufacturing.

The initiative considers mandatory third-party certification and the adoption of existing safety standards (CSA C22.2 No. 62133-2, CSA C22.2 No. 62133-1 or equivalent standards), while excluding certain products like medical devices, vehicles, and mains power-connected products already regulated under other frameworks.
