TÜV Rheinland (InterCert) has been granted Notified Body status by the European Commission for the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The EU Battery Regulation replaces the previous Battery Directive (2006/66/EC).
As a Notified Body, TÜV Rheinland supports companies globally in meeting the new requirements of the regulation and bringing their products to market in compliance. TÜV Rheinland thus offers comprehensive services in Europe and all over the world for the entire life cycle of batteries – from conformity assessments and safety and performance tests to environmental compatibility and recyclability testing.
Challenges for the global battery supply chain
The EU Battery Regulation poses significant challenges for companies and their global battery supply chains: From August 2027, manufacturers will have to comply with new due diligence requirements for their supply chains. Companies and importers of batteries will then have to prove, for example, that raw materials such as cobalt and nickel have been sourced responsibly.
Since February 2024, the regulation has required them to ensure that their batteries meet strict requirements for safety, performance, sustainability, and recycling before they can be placed on the market in the European Union. To prove this, manufacturers commission notified bodies such as TÜV Rheinland.
