TÜV Rheinland Awards NIO with ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gases Verification and ISO 14067 Product Carbon Footprint Certificates

Greater China | 10 April, 2024

Recently, TÜV Rheinland Greater China, an independent international third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization, awarded NIO for organizational-level greenhouse gas verification (carbon verification) based on the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard. Concurrently, NIO's ET5 model, 150kW induction asynchronous drive system, 210kW permanent magnet synchronous drive system, and 75kWh battery pack received TÜV Rheinland's product carbon footprint certificates based on the ISO 14067 standard. This marks the first time NIO has conducted product carbon footprint verification for the entire vehicle, and electric drive system, indicating a significant step forward in NIO's quantification and management of greenhouse gas emissions.

Representatives Attending the Certification Ceremony: Zang Haifei, Director of NIO’s Corporate Quality and ESG Sustainability Department, Xie Zhengxian, Senior Director of the Electric Drive System Manufacturing Operations Department, Fang Weimin, Vice President of TÜV Rheinland Greater China People & Business Assurance Services and Lutz Frankholz, Managing Director of the TÜV Rheinland Shanghai and Suzhou, along with other representatives from both parties.

During this project, the TÜV Rheinland audit team verified the results of NIO’s organizational-level greenhouse gas inventory following ISO 14064 standards. Through on-site visits, data collection, and analysis, they verified the sources of greenhouse gas emissions at the organizational level. Following the requirements of the ISO 14067 standard, the lifecycle carbon footprint of the ET5 model (including the entire battery) and the two electric drive systems were verified through document review, on-site audits of the vehicle factory and key suppliers, focusing on system boundaries, data collection, calculation methods, and the quality of data and reporting.

Zang Haifei, reiterated NIO's commitment to sustainability. He stated, "As a leading smart electric vehicle company, NIO has always adhered to the 'Blue Sky Coming' initiative. We are committed to creating low-carbon products and actively implementing low-carbon measures. Our focus on carbon reduction in product design, manufacturing, supply chain, and user usage is unwavering. We will continue to enhance the green and low-carbon competitiveness of our products, providing environmentally friendly and sustainable products and services. Our goal is to contribute to global sustainable development and welcome clearer skies."

Fang Weimin: "Through many years of cooperation, we have seen NIO consistently practice energy conservation, carbon reduction, and sustainable production. From the vehicle body to the interior, from factory production to service operations, NIO integrates environmental and low-carbon design into its industry chain ecosystem, reducing carbon emissions from both organizations and products. In the future, TÜV Rheinland will continue to rely on its experience and technology in the new energy vehicle and low-carbon sustainable fields to support NIO's sustainable development strategy, collaborating with partners throughout the supply chain to promote high-quality development of the new energy vehicle industry."
