TÜV Rheinland announces Vinicius Gibrail as the new Director of the Solar and Commercial Products division for South America. The executive, who has more than 25 years of leadership experience, takes on the mission of driving the company's growth in the sector, strengthening its presence in certification, testing, and approvals of solar products and systems, components, power electronics, and machinery.
Gibrail has a solid background in strategic management, general administration, and commercial operations. His career has been built in multinational companies across Latin America, and before joining TÜV Rheinland, he served as General Manager of the Latin American subsidiaries of Array Technologies and Schneider Electric, where he led multidisciplinary teams and strengthened relationships with strategic clients. His expertise spans commercial strategy development, marketing, import and export, logistics, finance, and high-performance team management.
"TÜV Rheinland plays a key role in ensuring the safety, quality, and reliability of solutions that drive the solar energy sector. I am very excited to contribute to the company’s expansion and consolidation in South America. The region has enormous potential for sustainable growth," says Vinicius Gibrail.
At TÜV Rheinland, Vinicius will be responsible for the division’s strategic direction and financial results, with a special focus on expanding services in key markets in the region, including Brazil, Argentina, and Chile.
TÜV Rheinland’s Solar and Commercial Products team comprises a diverse network of experts across six continents, serving manufacturers, suppliers, and operators of solar products and systems, components, power electronics, and machinery. The scope of services includes safety, performance, and reliability assessments, as well as EMC and wireless technology testing across a wide range of products, including photovoltaics. Recent focus is on delivering sustainability related services and addressing opportunities in areas such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
"Vinicius' experience and leadership are essential to further strengthening our position as a reference in the industry. The energy transition and the rapid growth of solar energy in the region require reliable and innovative certification solutions, and we are confident that he will add significant value to our operations," says Frank Piller, Global Senior Vice President for Solar & Commercial Products, at TÜV Rheinland.
Growth of the South American Market
TÜV Rheinland is market leader for Component and Machinery certification in South America and actively expanding its business. The solar energy market in Brazil and South America has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by robust investments, favorable policies, and abundant solar resources. In 2024, Brazil added 14.3 GW of photovoltaic solar capacity, bringing the total operational capacity to 52.2 GW. Of this total, 35 GW corresponds to distributed generation and 17.2 GW to centralized generation. Solar energy now represents 21.3% of the national electricity matrix, consolidating itself as the second-largest source of power generation in the country.
Investments in the Brazilian solar sector reached BRL 54.9 billion in 2024, accumulating more than BRL 239 billion since 2012. Additionally, the sector created over 429,000 new jobs in 2024, totaling more than 1.5 million jobs since 2012.
In South America, Chile stands out for harnessing the high solar radiation of the Atacama Desert. The country has more than 550 operational solar projects, totaling 9 GW of installed capacity, and plans to add another 2.6 GW by 2025. However, challenges such as the need for adequate transmission infrastructure and energy storage solutions still need to be addressed.
Other countries in the region are also making progress in the solar sector. Argentina reached 1 GW of solar capacity in 2021. These figures reflect South America’s growing commitment to energy diversification and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
