Initial situation and requirements
Nordex Energy GmbH is a German designer, manufacturer and distributor of wind turbines. In 2013, the company launched a new generation, optimized wind turbine N117/2400 model R120MT equipped with a new turbular steel tower. For the manufacturer, certification of wind turbines is crucial and compliance with standards and requirements is of utmost importance.
TÜV Rheinland‘s many years of experience in verification of static and dynamic calculations and more generally in the field of wind energy services led Nordex representatives choose TÜV Rheinland to provide the type approval and design evaluation and certification according to a series of local and international standards for its N117/2400 steel tower.
TÜV Rheinland Certification Body for Products
TÜV Rheinland is accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) as a Certification Body for type and component certification of wind turbines in accordance with international standard IEC 61400-22.

Solutions, results
In the wind energy industry, type certification confirms that the wind turbine type is designed, documented, and manufactured to comply with the design specifications, specific standards and other technical requirements. Following the launch of a new generation wind turbine steel tower, Nordex required the support of a neutral Certification Body. A team of five experts from TÜV Rheinland provided type approval services according to the DIBt 2012, technical building regulations from the German Institute for Civil Engineering (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik) and design evaluation and certification of the tower according to the international standards IEC 61400-22 on type ad component certification of wind turbines.
Evaluation and certification services were conducted on the N117/2400 optimized steel tower to include testing of the flat foundation both with and without buoyancy as well as examination of tower internals consisting mainly of platforms. We provided fast response to our client’s time constraints and upon completion of the certification process, Nordex received approval for the design calculation of its steel tower.
The N117/2400 wind turbine has been developed for low-wind sites. Users of this wind turbine can therefore achieve high and steady electricity production in regions characterized by lighter winds. |
