Initial situation and requirements

The company operates the world's largest single hydrocarbon network. Ensuring reliable operation - L0 of plant components is one of the most critical tasks during the entire plant life cycle. Operating the world's largest single hydrocarbon network, a global petroleum and chemicals enterprise and state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia needed to analyse the current risk status for its plant equipment. To identify and prevent the potential failure and damage of components, the planned inspection project included the assessment of the probability of failures and related consequences for five gas plants and tank farms at five different locations.

As an experienced risk based inspection service provider, TÜV Rheinland was the preferred choice for this project. Our experts have been performing risk based inspection services for the company’s plants at several locations across Saudi Arabia since 2012, and the project is still ongoing.

The RBI methodology, based on API RP-580 and API RP-581 standards, determines the characterization of risk associated with the static components of production systems. By applying the appropriate tools, technology and software, the expert team from TÜV Rheinland optimized the plant inspection process. The type of and rate at which damage might potentially happen have been identified based on the information gathered. The fundamental goal of RBI was to develop inspection plans based on the probabilistic characterization of deterioration and the probability modeling of the failure consequence.

The experts provided qualitative assessment for each plant, saving time and inspection costs by optimizing maintenance - L0 . In the final RBI study, TÜV Rheinland specialists submitted recommendations for an inspection plan for additional necessary inspection and maintenance tasks.
