Initial situation and requirements
Before components can be transported to and installed at the production site, the components have to be inspected according to the API or ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements. This approach cuts down on delays at the job site because it would be too time-consuming to X-ray all welds onsite.
As one of the leading provider for inspection and conventional non-destructive testing services in the oil and gas industry, McCarl’s Inc. entrusted us to help them reduce risk, prevent material defects and ensure maximum safety and optimal functions of pre-fabricated pipes.
McCarl’s Inc. is ranked among the top 50 industrial contractors in the USA with over 70 years of experience in construction and fabrication for industry leaders in the oil and gas industry. |

Solutions, results
Since September 2013, TÜV Rheinland has been performing pre-fabrication non-destructive testing (NDT) of components at McCarl’s sites in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and the West Virginia pan handle. The NDT services include X-rays, ultrasonic examinations, visual inspection, liquid penetrant inspections and magnetic particle testing.
A variety of job sites require different materials, creating multiple testing scenarios for the inspection crew every day. On rare occasions when a fabrication is needed onsite, TÜV Rheinland inspectors take a road trip to a job site instead of performing testing at a fabrication facility. It may take the crew up to four hours one way to get on location. In these cases, the crew works quickly and efficiently to inspect up to 100% of the welds so that the work could resume onsite after evaluations confirm that all is in order.
