Initial situation and requirements
This manufacturer of large diesel engines and complete propulsion systems for ships, heavy agricultural, rail and military vehicles and for the energy industry is one of the world’s leading diesel generator specialists. During the installation of equipment at three nuclear power plants in China, the leading diesel generator manufacturer cooperated with TÜV Rheinland to provide occupational health, safety and environment (HSE) training and on-site workplace safety inspections.
Due to the complexity of emergency diesel generator installation and the special construction environment in a nuclear power plant, it was essential to establish systematic self-protection awareness and a solid safety-management culture within the manufacturer’s team of international engineers.
Solution and Results
Extensive experience in safety and risk management in nuclear power plants made TÜV Rheinland the preferred choice for this world-leading Chinese provider of large diesel and gas engines.
Key elements of the HSE risk-management and safety concept covered all relevant areas including HSE training, management and inspection; organizational responsibility; safety planning; personnel, work, material, component and equipment safety; accident and emergency measures. During the training, numerous case studies were presented and written exams were conducted to verify the comprehension of participating engineers.
Construction-site inspections were performed by our team of managers and registered HSE engineers. Inspection and examination focused on various types of hazard identification tailored to the plant operator’s safety management requirements and specific safety- risk management policies.
Finally, our experts provided the leading diesel generator manufacturer a summary of comprehensive evaluation findings and recommendations for improvement. The expert team also planned emergency-evacuation routes for each floor in the diesel generator facility to assure team-members safety.
