For more than 140 years, TÜV Rheinland has stood for ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in conjunction with people, the environment, and technology. To meet our claim for corporate responsibility and to apply our understanding, we align our actions with the values enshrined in our company policy – in their present form based on universal principles and rules. As a member of both the UN Global Compact and the IFIA (International Federation of Inspection Agencies), the values of these organizations influence our own corporate philosophy. Many of their principles have long been firmly entrenched in our company’s mission and vision. They are inextricably linked to the work we do in various fields.
We are incorruptible and act with fairness. We live by our values on a foundation of trust and transparency. We build trust. We align all of our efforts with the standards set for us. We make our decisions transparent and communicate them clearly.
We achieve excellence in all our processes and products. Only really good work satisfies us. Our comprehensive competence is a prerequisite for that. We continue to further develop our products with focused innovations. For us, safety has the highest priority.
We put the needs of our customers first. We put the customer first in how we think and how we work. We keep a sound balance between committing to our customers and maintaining our independence.
We are performance oriented and accept responsibility. Our performance orientation is the source for the satisfaction of our customers and the success of our work. We act with determination and always accept responsibility for our actions. We consider mistakes opportunities for doing it better.
We are agile, flexible, and responsive in a changing world. We respond immediately to developments in our markets and society at large. We manage our own changes actively and consider change as an opportunity. We stay flexible and keep evolving with energy.
Company Policy on Values and Responsibility
The mission statement of the TÜV Rheinland Group outlines a clear commitment to its social, environmental, and economic responsibility. To ensure this is more than just mere rhetoric, we have adopted a mandatory consolidated Company Policy on Values and Responsibility applicable to all of the Group's companies. The policy acts as a guideline for our everyday work. Our objective is to build on and retain our reputation as a quality leader in the market. This is why we share the same commitment to principles and standards throughout the Group, where the same standards on neutrality, diligence, and objectivity apply.
We believe companies bear a responsibility for their sphere of influence. To ensure this understanding leads to effective action, it is important that players can exchange experiences and ideas on all levels. In 2006, we therefore signed the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, a voluntary United Nations initiative for businesses. This decisive strategic step sealed our advocacy of global compliance with human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and the fight against corruption.
To ensure the entire company adheres to this commitment, we incorporated the principles of the UN Global Compact in our own mission statement in 2007 and also made them the foundation of our Company Policy on Values and Responsibility. Furthermore, the values and principles of the UN Global Compact clearly define how we deal with business partners. Before establishing business relationships with TÜV Rheinland, suppliers must agree to comply with our compliance guidelines, laws, human rights and the UN Global Compact principles.
We also take an active role in international projects - for example, on environmental protection, compliance training, United Nations Global Compact principles, and even in discussions on the responsibility businesses bear in conflict zones. In doing so, we aim to strengthen our position as a reliable and valuable partner and make a significant contribution to the fulfilment and spread of ethical business practices and sustainable development.
We believe UN Global Compact principles must play a greater role in day-to-day business. We have therefore adopted an active role in the German Global Compact Network (DGCN), committed to the ideas laid down in the UN Global Compact.
By joining the International Federation of Inspection Agencies (IFIA), the international umbrella organization for certification bodies, in 2007, we are committed to systematically establishing and developing a compliance system in accordance with the "IFIA Compliance Code". Due to our membership, we are able to network specifically on issues of ethics and compliance within our industry. The governing body also holds a forum on compliance rules, ethical principles, and scientific standards and methods, and is also a global leader that sets standards for the entire industry. Every year, an independent third party audits our compliance system to certify that it meets the stringent requirements of the IFIA.
