QS-9000:1998 was developed by the "Big Three" automakers (Chrysler, Ford, General Motors) with the goal of developing a fundamental quality system that provides continuous improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and reducing supplier variation within the Automotive industry.

The QS-9000:1998 standard is a harmonization of the ISO 9001:1994 with Chrysler's Supplier Quality Assurance Manual, Ford's Q101 and General Motors' Targets for Excellence.
