Semi Guidelines

What is SEMI?

Semiconductor manufacturing machinery is often very complex and using traditional standards may not necessarily be sufficient to fulfil the increasing demand for safety and liability within the industry. Therefore, SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International), a globally operating alliance in the semiconductor industry, developed the SEMI S2 guideline for semiconductor machine assessment which is quickly becoming a worldwide safety criteria for equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The standard covers a large variety of safety and health provisions such as regulatory requirements, electrical, mechanical, fire, chemical, radiation, noise, ventilation, emergency shutdown ergonomic hazards and more.

Complying with the SEMI S2 guideline, that also references other SEMI guidelines, is becoming more and more important as globally operating companies like IBM, AMD, Intel, Phillips, Texas Instruments and Motorola are now specifying third-party assessment according to SEMI S2 as a requirement in their contracts.

SEMI guidelines have been widely adopted by the semiconductor industry and often end users regard compliance with them as being more important than compliance with national regulations such as the CE marking. However, national regulations are law and a company may be prosecuted for not complying with the legal requirements. The ensure compliance, as a designer or manufacturer, knowledge of the essential points of the guideline is necessary. TUV offers customised training courses, to suit individuals and groups whatever your requirements. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further details.
