The WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive 2002/96/EC address the end of life (EOL) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2002/95/EC are having huge impact on the electronics industry. Anyone who produces or distributes electronic or electrical goods to the European market, they have to compliance these new directives
What is WEEE? Waste from Electrical and Electronic EquipmentDeals with the best available treatment, recovery and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Legislation in each country is approved or pending, with compliance by August 13, 2005.
What is RoHS? The European Union (EU) Directive on the Restriction of use of certain Hazardous. Substances restricts the use of six substances in electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market after 1st July 2006.
The RoHS directive requires companies to eliminate six known banned substances from their products: lead, mercury, cadium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl either (PBDE). The directive goes hand-in-hand with the WEEE
The following product categories will be impacted by these new directives:
- Large and small appliances
- IT & telecommunications equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting equipment
- Electronic tools (except large-scale stationary industrial tools)
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment
- Medical devices (except all implanted and infected products)
- Monitoring and control instruments
- Automatic dispensers
NEW RoHS Mark
TUV Rheinland now offers labeling for RoHS compliance which allows system manufacturers prove to the EU that they are RoHS compliant and using RoHS compliant components in the manufacture of their product. The RoHS Directive is a substantial challenge for many companies. TUV can offer the complete services package through:
