ISO 14001 : 2004
What is ISO 14001 : 2004 about?
ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies processes for controlling and improving a company’s environmental performance. This can have a number of benefits such as:
Demonstration of high environmental standards
Compliance with legislation
Reduction of waste and costs
Responsible and motivational actions
Improvement of efficiency
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are systems to manage and control the environmental impacts produced by companies. The ISO 14001 standard does not contain any specific environmental laws or regulations, as these are mostly country specific, but requires that companies identify and evaluate all environmental impacts, and determine those which are most significant by setting environmental objectives to prevent pollution.
ISO 14001 contains the following elements to achieve the specified goals:
- Environmental policy
- Planning
- Implementation and operation
- Checking and corrective action
- Management review
- Continuous improvement
This standard requires organisations, to establish and maintain procedures that identify and have access to relevant legislation and regulations, and ensure that their legislative records are applicable to its business activities. ISO 14001 provides management with the framework to record and maintain all applicable permits, licences and authorisations. Initially, a company should establish its current position by conducting a review, which should cover legal and regulatory requirements and the identification of significant environmental aspects. Moreover, the review should cover all existing environmental practices and procedures and feedback from any previous incidents.
