ATEX Directive (94/9/EC)

The ATEX directive became mandatory within the European Union on 1 July 2003. The directive covers both electrical and mechanical equipment and protective systems intended for use in or in conjunction with, potentially explosive atmospheres that on the surface below ground and on fixed offshore installations.. The directive is an homogenisation of various European Union member states national laws and the purpose of the directive is to facilitate the safe use and marketability of products made within the European Union .

The ATEX directive regulates the manufacturing of mechanical equipment, electrical equipment and protective systems, which are likely to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Potentially explosive atmospheres are atmospheres that contain materials such as such as flammable vapours, flammable gases or dust. The directive proscribes the minimum health and safety requirements of devices which are likely to present an ignition risk that could trigger an explosion or a fire. The directive also prescribes the technical requirements for protective systems whose function is to prevent explosion or fire in a system.

It is pertinent to note that the scope of the directive excludes some products. Typical products excluded from the directive include medical devices, equipment for use in domestic and non commercial environments, equipment on board sea going vessels and military equipment .

Equipment is divided into two groups depending on whether it is for use below or above ground. The equipment is further divided into categories depending on the particular conditions in which the equipment operates.

Equipment that falls under the scope of the directive must satisfy specific health and safety requirements, be subject to type examination in some cases, be subject to conformity assessment by a notified body in the majority of cases and carry CE marking and information about the manufacturer.
