A safer workplace - PN-N-18001 and OHSAS 18001 – Management of Safety and Work Hygiene

Differences between OHSAS 18001 and PN-N-18001 are slim and mainly refer to the approach towards third parties in the premises of a company and professional risk assessment for work positions.

Norm PN-N-18001:2004 "Safety and work hygiene management systems. Requirements" and OHSAS 18001:1999 specification contain guidelines related to the safety and work hygiene management under general company (organisation) management.

Requirements contained in the documents make it possible for the organisation to formulate policy and goals in accordance with the needs with regard to safety and work hygiene and efficient implementation of the P\policy by achieving the adapted goals. Norm PN-N-18001 and OHSAS 18001 represent a basis for certification of the management system with regard to aspects related to safety and work hygiene, similarly to ISO 9001 with respect to quality management and ISO 14001 with respect to environmental management.

They were worked out in a manner making it possible to integrate in practice systems of quality management, environmental management and safety and work hygiene. Certification of conformity with PN-N-18001 or OHSAS 18001 confirms that a company acts efficiently and responsibly with regard to employees’ life and health protection.

The Polish norm PN-N-18001:2004 is compatible with OHSAS 18001 which means that the safety and work hygiene management fulfilling the requirements of PN-N-18001:2004 meets also requirements of OHSAS 18001:1999 specification. A company entering the certification process of conformity with PN-N-18001 can receive a certificate of conformity with OHSAS 18001, whereas it is not necessary to carry out an additional audit.
