ISO/TS 16949

Transparency through TÜV certification

TÜV Rheinland/Berlin-Brandenburg offers comprehensive certification in accordance with the quality management system ISO/TS 16949.

The ISO/TS 16949 was jointly developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) members and the ISO/TC 176, a Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

ISO/TS 16949 with its customer-specific attachments, is based on ISO 9000:2000 and satisfies the respective current requirements of AVSQ (Italian), EAQF (French), QS-9000 (U.S.) and VDA6.1 (German). The IATF has also developed a registration scheme for supplier 3rd party registration to the ISO/TS 16949 which includes common:

    • registration rules for certification bodies
    • contract language with certification and accreditation bodies
    • minimum third party auditor qualifications
    • ISO/TS 16949 auditor qualification process

While not replacing the existing standards, AVSQ94, EAQF94, QS-9000 and VDA6.1, compliance with ISO/TS 16949, the associated customer specific requirements, and the above registration scheme, is accepted as the international equivalent by IATF participating organizations. The document represents an option for suppliers.

TÜV certification in accordance with ISO/TS 16949 creates transparency and comprehensibility for all processes. Thus it becomes possible to evaluate the profitability of all the divisions of a company.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The international Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a world-wide federation of national standards bodies (Member Bodies). New International Standards are prepared by Technical Committees. Technical Committees are assembled from representatives of each Member Body interested in the subject. Draft International Standards are circulated to the Member Bodies and become International Standards if they are approved by at least 75 % of the Member Bodies casting a vote.

In other circumstances a technical committee may decide to publish other types of normative documents:

    • an ISO Publicly Available Specification (ISO/PAS) represents an agreement between technical experts in an ISO working group and is accepted for publication if it is approved by 50 % of the members of the parent committee casting a vote;
    • an ISO Technical Specification (ISO/TS) represents an agreement between the members of a technical committee and is accepted for publication if it is approved by 2/3 of the members of the committee casting a vote.

An ISO/PAS or ISO/TS is reviewed every three years with a view to deciding whether it can be transformed into an International Standard.
