TÜV Rheinland Earns Auditing Accreditation For TAPA’S Trucking Security Requirements
01-10-12Boxborough, MA
TÜV Rheinland was approved in North America as a third-party auditing body for the Trucking Security Requirements (TSR) certification by The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA). The TSR include certifiable standards that help provide at least minimum levels of security throughout the supply chain using trucking and associated operations.
The TSR accreditation complements TÜV Rheinland’s Freight Security Requirements (FSR) accreditation. TAPA developed the FSR to help protect products during storage and transit within the supply chain. TAPA certifications are recognized globally as the industry standard for cargo facility and transport security and are awarded only to facilities that comply with the highest security standards.
“TAPA highly recommends that the TSR certification standards be employed as an essential part of the shipper-carrier relationship,” said Lisa Greenleaf, North American Business Stream Manager, TÜV Rheinland Management Systems Certifications group. “Naturally, a carrier that has been certified to meet particular security standards will be more attractive to security-conscious manufacturers, shippers and logistics providers.”
TAPA’s TSR address physical security of the truck and trailer, security systems (such as incident notification procedure documentation and satellite tracking systems), security procedures (such as secure parking and route scheduling), personnel security, driver training and enhanced security requirements (such as double driver and armed escorts). Carriers are granted one of three certification levels, with classification 1 featuring the highest level of security.
“TAPA certification is an important step carriers can take to help ensure cargo security,” said Alan Spear, chairman of the TAPA Americas and director of cargo security loss control for Chartis Insurance. “TAPA members, who include manufacturers, shippers, carriers, insurers and service providers, intend to select suppliers that meet or exceed the TSR compliance requirements.”
TAPA audits are offered as part of TÜV Rheinland Security Services, which also provides transportation services related to ISO 28000 supply chain security management, C-TPAT and AEO based supply chain security, ISO/PAS 28002 supply chain resilience, North American Security Products Organization (NASPO) standards, and others.

About TAPA
The Transported Asset Protection Association is a worldwide coalition of manufacturers, shippers, carriers, insurers, service providers, law enforcement and government agencies concerned with the risks of criminal activity against High Value Theft Targeted (HVTT) cargo in the transportation supply chain. TAPA members work together to prevent theft and other crimes against the transportation supply chain through the sharing of information, development of supply chain security standards, and cooperation with government agencies.
TAPA Americas is one of three primary branches of TAPA worldwide; the other two being TAPA EMEA (Europe and Africa) and TAPA APAC (Asia/Pacific). Through these branches, TAPA also has chapters in South Africa and Mexico and is in process of developing chapters in other countries where cargo crime is prevalent. Each TAPA branch or chapter participates as a member of the worldwide organization, but also responds to the needs of its own regional members. TAPA membership and TAPA certification of facilities in the transportation supply chain have become recognized as the best in class in the fight against cargo crime.
