EMC Standard Update

On September 30th 2011, the European Commission published several revised EMC standards in the Official Journal. The revisions to the standards are significant and will require many manufacturers to retest products to the new requirements to maintain their CE compliance. Following is a summary of the changes to the standards and a discussion of some of the new standards.
The EN 50090-2-2 standard for Home and Building electronic systems has been replaced with a new series of standards, EN 50491-5-1:2010 through EN 50491-5-3:2010
Several new standards have been added, EN 50529-1:2010 and EN 50529-2:2010. These introduce EMC requirements for Wire Line Telecommunication networks using coaxial cables and telephone wires. EN 50550:2011 introduces EMC requirements for Power Frequency Overvoltage protection devices for household and similar applications. EN 1155:1997 has been added and covers EMC requirements for Building hardware: Electrically powered hold open devices for swing doors.
Many popular EMC standards have been updated with significant changes:
EN 55022:2010 now references CISPR 22:2008 and becomes mandatory on Dec 1st 2013, EN 55024:2010 has technical changes, especially for DSL and other telecom equipment, it becomes mandatory on Dec 1st 2013. EN 61000-6-3:2007, the Generic emissions standard for residential, commercial and light industrial environments, has a new amendment, A1:2011 that introduces limits for emissions in the frequency range of 1-6Ghz. EN 61000-6-4:2007, the Generic emissions standard for industrial environments, has a new amendment, A1:2011 that introduces limits for emissions in the frequency range of 1-6Ghz. Both of these amendments become mandatory on January 12th 2014.
