XDSL
XDSL is the name coined for the family of digital subscriber line technologies ranging from HDSL through to VDSL.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
ADSL is a modem technology that transforms ordinary phone lines (also known as "twisted copper pairs") into high-speed digital lines for ultra-fast Internet access. ADSL provides speeds of up to 8 Mbps downstream (to the user) and up to 1 Mbps upstream, depending on line length, loop and line conditions.
HDSL (High Data Rate Digital Subscribe Line)
Modems on either end of one or more twisted pair wires that deliver T1 or E1 speeds. At present T1 requires two lines and E1 requires three.
SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
HDSL plus POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) over a single telephone line. It is important to distinguish, however, as SDSL operates over POTS and is suitable for symmetric services to the residences of individual customers.
VDSL (Very High Data Rate Digital Subscriber Line)
Modem for twisted-pair access, operating at data rates of 12.9 ~ 52.8 Mbps, with a corresponding maximum reach ranging from 4500 feet to 1000 feet of 24 gauge twisted pairs.
