Child & Toys : Safety for children
TÜV Rheinland experts test the safety and quality of toys and other products which 0 to 14 years old interact with. The wide variety of the products tested range from dummies and prams to children's bicycles and video games.
Products with the GS and PROOF Marks offer the guarantee of verified standards of safety and quality which are very important for the first years of a child's life.
Safety of Toys (88/378/EEC)
Since the Toy Safety Directive (88/378/EEC) was put into force in Europe in 1988, TÜV Rheinland has tested thousands of toys to ensure that they are safe and comply with the European regulations. Type of toys need to be tested include everything including plush toys, motor operated toys, electronic toys, remote control toys, etc.
Depending on specific product characteristics, tests are performed according to the following directives.
- Toys Safety Directive 88/378/EEC- EN 71
- Physical and mechanical features
- Flammability
- Heavy metals migration
- Experimental sets for chemistry and related activities
- Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets
- Finger paints
- Swings, Slides and similar activity toys for indoor, outdoor family domestic use
- Organic chemicals used in toys
- EN 62115 (safety testing for electrical toys)
- Related German DIN standards (e.g. Recommendation LFGB XL VII)
- Investigation of the harmful substances used in toys according to Annex II of 88/378/EEC
