In 2004, in keeping with World Trade Organization (WTO) recommendations, the test and certification monopoly previously enjoyed by the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO) was scrapped.
Since the system came in force, it is open under the aegis of the Supreme Economic Council. SASO plays a supporting role by drawing up standards, but no longer enjoys its previous general responsibility.
