Answers
What does TÜV stand for?
TÜV is an acronym for "Technischer Überwachungsverein". In English, it means Technical Inspection Association.
How did the TÜV originate 140 years ago?
In 1872, Gustav Schlieper established the first DÜV (Dampfkessel Überwachungsverein or Pressure Vessel Survey Association) in the city of Barmen. At that time, there had been a number of devastating steamboiler explosions, resulting in many injuries and casualties as well as factory closures. The association was founded to prevent such accidents by regular inspection.
Are all TÜVs the same?
No. In Germany, there are several TÜVs such as TÜV Rheinland or TÜV Hannover. Historically, these TÜVs were locally restricted and worked only in their designated area. TÜV Rheinland has recently merged with TÜV Berlin-Brandenburg.
When did TÜV Rheinland come to Korea?
20 years ago, TÜV Rheinland entered Korean market as the first international certification body. In 1987, TÜV Rheinland opened a representative office in Seoul. In the following decades, TÜV Rheinland Korea opened offices in Daegu and Changwon as well as one safety testing laboratory in Seoul. Recently, head office in Samsung-dong moved to Guro, Seoul.
