EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) --- Introduction
Electrical and electronic appliances generate electromagnetic disturbances and can be influenced by them. With products being increasingly used in close physical proximity, they have to be able to function without influencing each other detrimentally. This important characteristic of a product has come to be called Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
EMC is usually grouped into two fields:
1. Emission, also known as Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and
2. Immunity (or Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS))
Within the European Union, requirements for EMC have been laid down as Council Directive 89/336/EEC Conformity with this Directive became mandatory on 1 January 1996. When so-called harmonized standards are available, the manufacturer may base his conformity declaration directly on the compliance with these standards.
For certain products, however, harmonized standards cannot be used for a variety of reasons. In such cases, EMC must be certified by a Competent Body via the TCF route (Technical Construction File). TÜV Rheinland has been accredited as Competent Body within the framework of the EMC Directive by the Regulating Authority for Telecommunications and Post (Regulierungsbehoerde fuer Telekommunikation und Post).

Throughout Asia, TÜV Rheinland offers various kinds of conformity routes to meet numerous customer's needs. We can test your equipment at our laboratories or at the appointed independent EMC test sites. For large equipment which is difficult to transport, our EMC Mobile is available for testing at the client's premises.
After successful EMC testing by TÜV Rheinland proves that your product meets all applicable EU requirements, your product can bear the legally required CE marking. What is more, you can also obtain the coveted TÜV Rheinland EMC mark which is widely recognized as a valuable tool for building trade and consumer confidence.
For further explanations, please see the Frequently Asked Questions. Also, a list of necessary documentation and equipment is provided for the preparation of testing, which later becomes the basis of the TCF.
