Approval System for Radio Equipment in Japan

More than one hundred types of radio equipment are specified in the radio law (Article 38-2), such as mobile telephones and base stations, wireless LAN, Bluetooth enabled devices, ZigBee equipment, satellite communication terminals, PHS (Personal Handy phone System), cordless telephones and many more. For a complete overview please refer to the table below. TUV Rheinland Japan covers all of them.

For production, sale as well as operation of such radio equipment, its conformity with the technical regulations must be guaranteed and certified by a registered approval body. This certification is the official approval for entry to the market. The approval system is based on the Radio Law. It was enacted with an aim to eliminate interferences/obstructions between various devices, which use radio frequencies for public as well as private purposes.

TUV Rheinland is Registered Approval Body

Since 2003 TUV Rheinland is registered as approval body and has since then expanded its scope to include all radio equipment types which are specified in the radio law. We assure to delivering our approval duties from a legal and neutral standpoint and provide you with a reliable and speedy service based on our worldwide experiences over one century.

Approval Procedures of TUV Rheinland Japan

There are two kinds of approval procedures under the Technical Regulations Conformity Certification, etc. of Specified Radio Equipment:

·       Test Approval (Radio Law 38-6-1) ("Giteki")

·       Type Approval (Radio Law 38-24-1) ("Ninsho")

The Test Approval process is designed for equipment sold in small lot sizes. A representative number of units of the lot is tested. The approval is valid only for this one lot and a unique approval number is issued for each single unit of this lot. The approval process itself is slightly simpler than the type approval described below.

The Type Approval requires, in contrast, only one sample to be tested. The approval is valid for the whole production of the approved equipment model as long it has the same design and in the same manufacturing procedure.

For OEM models and for minor model changes, a simplified approval procedure is available.

Each manufacturer must prepare test sample(s). The samples need specific connectors and test modes to be accordance with the MIC test procedures. For details, please contact us.

At the completion of the approval, we issue a certificate to be sent to the applicant; and publish the following information on our Internet homepage: applicant name, model name, certificate number, and certification date. We, as official certifiers, are obliged to report all certified equipment to the MIC.
