Approvals for South America
Your Path to the South American Marketplace
Imports are set to continue to grow strongly in South America, and the prospects look especially good for suppliers of quality consumer goods. In today’s challenging world, the choice of a regulatory testing and compliance partner can make the difference between success and failure.
The Argentine law requires that products that might represent a potential risk to the end-user must demonstrate completion of the essential safety requirements before placing the products at the market. Thus, the manufacturer, importer, distributor, retailer or wholesaler of the product must prove compliance with the requirements by means of a certificate issued by an accredited and recognized Certification Body in Argentina. The global network of technical experts at TÜV Rheinland will put their local market knowledge to work for you, giving you streamlined solutions, faster market entry, and an internationally respected mark to help you maximize your market opportunities when you get there.

Argentina
Argentina has a modular system for product approval. In most cases, products are simply checked every time they go through customs. Electrical products with S mark certification qualify for reduced market surveillance. Either TÜV Rheinland or CB test reports are accepted.
Brazil
The Brazilian Institute of Metrology, Standardization, and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) is responsible for developing conformity assessment procedures and issuing accreditation. Standard procedures include:
- Safety Approval
- PROCEL method for testing energy efficiency
- SELO RUIDO procedure for measuring noise emissions
Household Appliances
As of July 2011, all electrical household appliances must be tested for conformity with the international standard IEC 60335-2-x. Optional authorization for various products is also possible. The certificates are valid for 2 to 5 years, depending on the product type. Extensions are possible on the basis of twice yearly inspections - which include select security checks.
Telecommunications
Telecommunication products in Brazil require approval and registration by authorized specialists. The national telecommunications agency ANATEL - Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações - carries out these procedures.
Medical Products
Medical products in Brazil must also be approved by INMETRO. They must also be registered with ANVISA, the Brazilian Ministry of Health. For more information, please consult our Web pages on medical products and technology.
