Pandemics and Epidemics
A pandemic is a nationwide and intercontinental spread of an infectious disease. In contrast, an epidemic is limited to a specific region. In a flu epidemic between 10 and 20% of a population is infected. In the event of a pandemic, infection rates of up to 50% can be expected, as the pathogens can spread rapidly and globally. The risk of pandemics rises with increasing mobility and due to increasingly networked world trade, as viruses simply need to follow the routes to spread even faster.
Legal Standards
- Occupational regulations, 1973 (Arbeitssicherheitsgesetz, ASIG)
- Occupational health and safety regulations as implemented in the EC Directive on occupational safety and health from 1996, Robert-Koch-Institut, Pandemieplanung
