Engineers without Borders awarded distinction of excellence from the innovations competition “Gemany – Land of Ideas”
Engineers without Borders began in 2008 with the construction of water tanks in Tanzania in order to provide locals access to clean water. In August 2010, the scope of the project was expanded with our financial support to the Baramba Girls School in Ngara in Tanzania. On April 20th 2011, under the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”, the project received the distinction of excellence in the “Selected Landmarks 2011” category.
This project pursues multiple charitable goals: On the one hand, safe water supplies improve the living and hygiene conditions of the girls, as well as the learning conditions. On the other hand, the physically stressful and time-consuming task of carrying water is reduced.
More on project goals and updates can be found at http://www.ingenieure-ohne-grenzen.org/ (only available in German)
The importance of those projects became apparent during the speech of Ahmada R. Ngemera, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania. He remembered the relevance of water for his home country as well as for the human being in general: „A human being can spend a month without food, but just one week without water. To use water efficient, we need knowledge. (…) Your work makes a big difference to people.“
When considering the Christmas Campaign 2010 “Donations instead of Gifts”, which once again included all Business Streams, Engineers without Borders remained on our minds. The generous donations from Business Streams plus the surplus proceeds from the participants of the SportsDay 2010, which totaled 25.000 Euro, will be donated to support a project in Kenya to be implemented by the local Cologne Chapter of Engineers without Borders.
