Environment

Protecting the environment is a core value of our identity as a sustainable company and is firmly anchored in our mission statement. We don't just leave things at abstract commitments. Every day, our experts invest their extensive technological knowledge into developing solutions that minimize negative environmental impact and help make it manageable in many areas of our lives. As part of a network that brings together science, politics and industry, we work on joint solutions for the challenges of our time.

Implementation of the Environmental Protection Guideline

In 1995 we introduced a binding Environmental Protection Guideline for all employees. This Guideline makes employees aware of how their work is relevant to the environment and gives instructions on how to act environmentally friendly.

Environmental management representatives look after the implementation of the Environmental Protection Guideline on a central and divisional level. This Guideline is binding on all employees. In addition, the environmental management representatives constantly develop and check opportunities to further reduce the effect of the company’s business activities on the environment. Particularly energy consumption and employee travel have environmental effects in our company.

We consume energy in the form of fuels, natural gas and heavy fuel oil, as well as electricity. Electricity is used to run PCs, lighting and technical equipment.

Energy efficiency

TÜV Rheinland has been improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions for a long time. We achieve this by e.g. using energy efficient technologies to run buildings. Additionally, as part of the refurbishment process designed to enhance energy efficiency, TÜV Rheinland has been replacing all the façade insulation and windows of TÜV Rheinland buildings for a number of years now by windows that meet the relevant technical standards. We have the latest cooling systems, which are operated without any CFCs.

We see further energy-saving potential in the “Energy-efficient Data Centre”. For the first time we defined objective criteria to measure energy efficiency. The Group’s data centre in Cologne was assessed, optimized for energy efficiency using the latest technology and equipped according to the latest Green IT standard.
