The SPICE / ISO 15504 standard
SPICE (Software Process Improvement Capability Determination) is a procedure for evaluating the quality of software development processes. As ISO 15504, it harmonises existing assessment approaches such as CMM or Bootstrap and integrates ISO 9000, thus expanding and deepening fundamental areas of software development.
ISO 15504 views the software development process from two dimensions:
- The first dimension focuses on the implementation of base practices by examining whether the required activities are actually carried out in individual projects and whether the expected results are delivered.
- The second evaluates how the activities were completed. It investigates what the applicable specifications are, how these specifications are adhered to and inspected, and the extent to which key figures for monitoring current performance are defined and evaluated. The associated activities are defined as “management practices” in SPICE.
