South Africa

South Africa, the foremost economic power on the dark continent, is home to 200 million inhabitants. The country has a well developed financial and legal system, together with a generally high-quality infrastructure (communication, electricity and transportation).

The EU and South Africa are engaged in economic relations that are regulated through treaties. According to a recent UN study, the average return on foreign direct investment in South Africa is 25%: more than twice the worldwide average. The country’s GDP is on a similar level to countries in eastern Europe.

Safety and EMC inspections are mandatory for the majority of electrical consumer goods. A ‘letter of authority’ or ‘certificate of conformance’ with the associated requirements is required by the customs authorities. Products can also carry the SABS safety mark, which is well known in South Africa, as an alternative to the letter of authority. This mark also makes it easier to market the product and is a mandatory prerequisite for some importers.
